Today's signal

Google unveiled Gemini Spark at I/O 2026, a 24/7 personal AI agent that runs on dedicated Google Cloud virtual machines and keeps working even when your laptop is off. It integrates natively with Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Chrome out of the box, with no manual setup required. When it rolls out to Google AI Ultra subscribers, users will be able to delegate tasks by emailing Spark through a dedicated Gmail address, the way they would message a human colleague.

Why it matters

Every major AI lab now has a personal agent. OpenAI has its ChatGPT Agent. Anthropic has Claude Cowork. But Spark has something no competitor can replicate overnight: Google's entire data infrastructure. Because Spark is built on the same stack that runs Gmail, Docs, and Search, it arrives pre-loaded with two decades of context about how you communicate and work, with zero integration friction. Competing agents have to build those connections through third-party permissions and manual setup. Spark skips all of it. Google also announced Gemini Omni at the same event, a new multimodal model that generates video from any combination of text, image, audio, and video inputs, with the first model, Gemini Omni Flash, already rolling out to paid subscribers and YouTube Shorts. The bigger picture: at I/O 2026, Sundar Pichai confirmed the Gemini app has crossed 900 million monthly active users, more than double the 400 million it had a year ago.

The take

The agent race is not being won on model quality. It is being won on distribution, and Google just played its strongest card. The company that already owns your inbox, your calendar, and your documents now has an agent that can act on all of them without asking permission first. The AI lab that figures out how to become the background layer of your working day wins the next decade. Google has a structural head start that no one can easily replicate.

The number

Google's Gemini app crossed 900 million monthly active users at I/O 2026, up from 400 million a year ago. Daily requests grew over seven times in the same period. That is the distribution foundation Spark is launching on top of.
